MSc International Management, 2019
Thailand
My university life there was exciting, and I’d even say incredible. My classes at UWE imparted a warm feeling to me.”
After completing my bachelor’s degree in computer science at Bangkok University, I worked for two years as a salesperson at an IT company in Thailand. Although I gained valuable experience, I realised I wanted greater professional growth. In Thailand, higher qualifications often lead to better career opportunities and salaries, so I decided to pursue a master’s degree to deepen my knowledge and advance my career.
Initially, I researched universities in Thailand, but my family encouraged me to study abroad. Having previously studied English in Australia for a year, I was already familiar with living overseas. I considered both Australia and the UK, comparing factors such as tuition fees and living costs, before deciding the UK was the better option.
Applying for the MSc International Management programme at the University of the West of England and obtaining my visa was a smooth process thanks to the guidance of UWE Asia Pacific’s Thailand office. They supported me throughout the application process and helped me prepare for studying abroad.
As my departure approached, I felt both nervous and excited. I wondered how different life in the UK would be from Bangkok and Australia, but my excitement about experiencing a new culture and environment outweighed any concerns.
Living and studying in Bristol was a rewarding experience. I stayed in a flat near the city centre and travelled to Frenchay Campus for classes. Although I experienced some culture shock initially, I quickly adapted and enjoyed meeting people from many different countries. One of the most memorable aspects of my university life was the welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
I made close friends from Nepal, Switzerland, Thailand, and many other countries. We studied together, explored the city, and spent time socialising outside of class. What I appreciated most about the International Management course was the teaching style.
Professors combined theory with practical activities and case studies, encouraging independent learning and critical thinking. This approach helped me understand how to apply management concepts in real business situations.
Alongside my studies, I worked part-time at Giggling Squid near the Clifton Suspension Bridge. Balancing work and study was challenging, but it taught me valuable time-management and self-discipline skills. By budgeting carefully, I was able to save money. and travel around the UK and Europe.
As a football fan, visiting Manchester was especially exciting because I support Manchester United. I also travelled to Italy, Switzerland, France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, with Switzerland becoming my favourite destination because of its peaceful atmosphere and beautiful scenery.
I returned to Thailand in late 2019 and soon secured a business development role with a hospitality start-up. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic forced the company to close, leaving me unemployed for several months. Eventually, I returned to the IT industry and later joined Shopee as a Junior Team Lead.
My MSc degree has significantly benefited my career. Recruiters in Thailand value international qualifications highly, and my studies gave me practical knowledge about global business, marketing, and international expansion. During my interview at Shopee, I was able to discuss these topics confidently, which helped me secure the position.
Studying abroad not only advanced my career but also broadened my perspective and improved my confidence. My advice to anyone considering studying overseas is not to be afraid. Meeting people from different cultures and stepping outside your comfort zone can be life changing. Even if language barriers exist, confidence and willingness to learn will open many opportunities.
