Overview of Sustainability in the Asia Pacific Region

Sustainability sits at the heart of our work at UWE Asia Pacific. Across the region, we are building meaningful partnerships and delivering high‑impact initiatives that inspire positive change within our communities. Our annual Sustainability Project Competition encourages students to explore solutions to some of today’s most pressing environmental and social challenges, helping them develop the skills and confidence to become future changemakers. We are also expanding our regional impact through a new partnership with the West Bengal Network of NGOs in India, allowing us to support grassroots projects focused on education, skills development, and community resilience. In addition, our collaboration with One Tree Planted enables us to contribute to global reforestation efforts, helping restore ecosystems, protect biodiversity, and strengthen climate resilience. Together with our students, partners, and wider networks, we are committed to shaping a greener, fairer, and more sustainable future for the Asia Pacific region.

Sustainability Project Competition

The UWE Sustainability Project Competition brings together student teams from across the Asia Pacific to develop innovative responses to key environmental and social issues. Each year, the competition highlights the creativity, leadership, and commitment of our students as they turn ideas into tangible, real‑world impact. You can explore the energy and ambition behind these projects by watching the highlight video from last year’s competition, hosted by Hainan Medical University.

West Bengal Network

UWE Asia Pacific works in close partnership with the West Bengal Network, supporting long‑term, community‑led development across Kolkata and wider West Bengal. Through this collaboration, we work alongside NGOs delivering education, skills training, and local development initiatives. Our contribution includes English language teaching support, teacher training, and opportunities for NGOs to engage with UWE staff and student volunteers. This partnership underpins our commitment to sustainability by strengthening skills, expanding opportunities, and building capacity where it can have lasting impact.

One Tree Planted

As part of our sustainability pledge, UWE Asia Pacific donates to One Tree Planted for every Pre‑Sessional English enrolment and every English Placement Test resit. One Tree Planted is an international non‑profit focused on reforestation and ecosystem restoration. Their work supports biodiversity, improves climate resilience, and promotes healthier environments for communities around the world. Through this partnership, our students directly contribute to global environmental restoration and help drive positive ecological change for future generations.

UWE Asia Pacific Staff Initiatives

We have an active Sustainability Group that brings colleagues together across the region to lead projects, share ideas, and integrate sustainability into our everyday work. The group meets regularly to plan initiatives, support global campaigns such as Earth Day and World Environment Day, and deliver activities including sustainability quizzes, recycling projects, green pledge boards, and power‑down energy‑saving actions. We are also launching a series of bitesize workshops designed to help staff explore a wide range of sustainability topics, from practical everyday actions to wider environmental issues, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to learn, engage, and contribute. Through collaboration and continual learning, sustainability is becoming a visible and valued part of our culture at UWE Asia Pacific.
