BA Graphic Design, 2023

Malaysia

I felt mostly excitement at the coming adventure, telling myself that I’d be able to deal with anything that came up along the way.”

My interest in graphic design began in my early teens when I joined online communities and experimented with creating graphics using web-based editors. Over time, I progressed to using Adobe Photoshop and continued developing my skills through tips and feedback shared by other community members. In high school, I applied these abilities to various committees, including the Yearbook Committee, where I created graphics for print materials, t-shirts, and other projects. During this period, I also realized that graphic design was a professional field and became increasingly aware of its impact on the media and visual culture surrounding me. I enjoyed approaching projects from both technical and conceptual perspectives.

I later completed a diploma in Malaysia that focused largely on the technical and commercial aspects of graphic design, particularly advertising and mass communication. Wanting to further develop my creative practice, I decided to pursue a BA in Graphic Design. Since my former college, The One Academy, was affiliated with University of the West of England, UWE became my preferred choice. Although I considered studying in London, I was drawn to Bristol after attending an online sharing session about the university and the city. Since arriving, the experience has lived up to my expectations.

The application process was smooth, with support from both The One Academy and UWE Asia Pacific representative Waimun Chew, who helped guide me through the process. Being able to submit my existing college portfolio also made the application much more manageable. Moving to the UK was my first experience living in this part of the world, and although it was a major step, I approached it with excitement and confidence. My father accompanied me on the journey, which made the transition easier while also giving him a chance to explore Bristol.

I currently live in private accommodation near the city centre, close to Arnolfini at City Campus, where my classes are held. Bristol’s slower pace of life, walkability, and thriving art scene have all contributed positively to my experience. I appreciate how the city balances a calm environment with an active creative community, allowing me to focus on coursework while still engaging with exhibitions, events, and the broader artistic culture.

The teaching experience at UWE has also been especially encouraging. My tutors, Laura Parke and Abbie Vickress, created a welcoming atmosphere from the very beginning, and the feedback sessions feel inspiring rather than intimidating. I particularly enjoy the course structure, which gives students time to independently develop projects while still benefiting from lectures, tutorials, and collaborative activities.

Through my studies, I have begun reassessing my long-term interests within graphic design. After spending several years focused on advertising during my diploma, I have become increasingly interested in how design can draw attention to overlooked aspects of everyday life. I am especially drawn to editorial and print-based work, and I hope to further integrate illustration into my design practice. Overall, my experience at UWE has been extremely rewarding, both creatively and personally, and I hope to continue building my future in Bristol after graduation.
