Malaysia

I figured that putting myself out there into the world — not to mention getting some traveling accomplished — could lead to a really memorable year or two.”

By my mid-teens, I began thinking seriously about my future. While science subjects never came naturally to me, I consistently excelled in English and history. Encouraged by older friends who had pursued law, I became interested in the idea of combining these strengths into a meaningful career. Law appealed to me because it involved argument, history, and communication, and I felt it would keep me engaged while building on skills I already possessed.

I began my law degree at INTI International University in Malaysia, where I noticed many senior students transferring overseas to complete their studies. Hearing about their experiences inspired me to consider studying abroad myself. I wanted to experience a different culture, travel, and challenge myself in a new environment.

Initially, I considered studying in Liverpool because of my passion for Liverpool FC. However, after meeting representatives from UWE Bristol in Malaysia, my perspective changed. Their warmth, support, and willingness to guide me through the application process stood out compared to other universities. After researching Bristol and UWE’s programs, I became increasingly convinced it was the right choice. In 2018, I was offered a 50% scholarship, which further confirmed my decision.

Although I had traveled within the Asia-Pacific region, moving to the UK was my first experience living so far from home. My friends were excited for me, and my parents strongly supported the opportunity, encouraging me to experience life abroad. After completing the visa process, I moved to Bristol and settled into private accommodation near campus. I immediately appreciated the city’s calm atmosphere, clean environment, and walkable streets, which contrasted greatly with the fast-paced life and tropical heat of Kuala Lumpur.

One of my most memorable experiences was seeing snow for the first time during winter in Bristol. Waking up to streets covered in white felt surreal, and my housemates and I spent days enjoying snowball fights and making a snowman. Combined with the festive Christmas atmosphere, it made the season unforgettable.

Academically, studying at UWE exceeded my expectations. The lecturers taught in an engaging and approachable way, breaking down complex legal concepts clearly and encouraging discussion in class. Unlike my earlier experiences in Malaysia, students were treated as equals and encouraged to express opinions and debate ideas openly. This environment helped me grow in confidence and independence.

Beyond academics, I found the staff at UWE exceptionally supportive. Whether inside or outside the classroom, I always felt welcomed and valued. This strong sense of community became one of my biggest takeaways from the university.

In 2019, I began the Bar course, where the same supportive teaching culture continued. Many lecturers were experienced practitioners, yet they remained approachable and skilled at connecting practical legal experience to the material they taught. Their ability to communicate difficult concepts effectively was one of UWE’s greatest strengths.

Outside my studies, I explored much of the UK with friends, especially during weekends and holidays. My favorite destination was Edinburgh, whose blend of history and modern life left a lasting impression on me. In Bristol itself, I especially loved the Clifton Suspension Bridge, which I visited several times for its incredible views.

After graduating in 2020 during the Covid pandemic, I returned to Malaysia and completed my pupillage at Shook Lin & Bok, one of the country’s oldest law firms. I was eventually called to the Bar in November 2020 and began pursuing a career focused on commercial and banking law.

Looking back, my time at UWE Bristol gave me not only a strong academic foundation, but also personal growth, confidence, and unforgettable life experiences. I would strongly recommend UWE to students seeking a supportive university that genuinely invests in their success.
