One of the projects I’ve taken part in is a collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute to work on a program in which I can teach about my Chinese culture and identity to kids in the UK and Hong Kong.”
Ever since childhood, I have loved drawing. I began with simple stick figures, creating stories to share with my father, who always encouraged me by keeping my artwork and praising my creativity. Recognizing my passion and artistic potential, my parents enrolled me in drawing classes. Through these experiences, I discovered that art was more than a hobby — it became a way to express myself, process emotions, and escape everyday stress. Cartoons and visual storytelling also inspired me greatly and strengthened my desire to pursue a creative path.
At first, I was unsure whether art could become a career, especially in Malaysia, where opportunities in the creative industry can be limited and less financially stable. Many families encourage their children to choose conventional professions, but fortunately my parents have always supported less traditional ambitions. Having both studied in the United States, they valued international education and encouraged exploration and independence.
When I expressed my wish to continue studying art, my parents researched overseas options and believed the UK would provide an excellent environment for creative development. Inspired by relatives who had previously studied there, I enrolled at The One Academy in Kuala Lumpur, which partners with UWE Bristol. After learning about UWE’s strong arts programs, scholarships, and positive student experiences, I decided it was the right fit for me.
Moving to the UK was a major milestone. Although I had travelled before, this was my first time flying abroad alone. Arriving in Bristol, I quickly appreciated the city’s welcoming and multicultural atmosphere. The diversity of people and the openness of the community made me feel comfortable and included. I also enjoyed the affordable lifestyle, vibrant cafés, and creative energy that surrounded the city.
My experience at UWE Bristol has been incredibly rewarding. The lecturers are professional, approachable, and encouraging, always motivating students to experiment and explore new ideas. For the first time, I found a healthy balance between academic work and extracurricular opportunities. One project I joined was a collaboration with the Hong Kong Design Institute, where we created educational activities about Chinese culture for children in the UK and Hong Kong. Through this experience, I was able to combine creativity with cultural education and intercultural understanding.
Living in Bristol has also expanded my interest in branding, photography, illustration, and visual communication. Being surrounded by innovative design in everyday life has helped me understand how design solves problems and communicates messages effectively. Resources like the Bower Ashton Library have further supported my development by providing access to art books, printing equipment, and past student work that inspire experimentation and creativity.
Alongside my studies, I took a part-time job at a Chinese restaurant, where I learned valuable communication and service skills while adapting to a different work culture. These experiences taught me the importance of flexibility, teamwork, and keeping an open mind when facing new challenges.
In the future, I hope to remain in the UK and work in a branding or creative agency, where I can continue learning from talented professionals and diverse cultures. Living abroad has broadened my perspective, strengthened my independence, and shown me the value of openness and adaptability. It has been a transformative experience that I would highly recommend to others seeking personal and creative growth.
