MSc Urban Planning, 2022
Indonesia
Not only was (UWE’s) MSc Urban Planning course precisely what I was looking for, but the more I learned about Bristol, the more I felt that the city had everything a student could want. ”
Growing up in Tangerang, I became increasingly aware of the poverty and poor urban conditions affecting many communities. I have always believed that people deserve safe, sustainable, and dignified places to live, and that urban planning plays a crucial role in creating a more harmonious future for society. My ambition is to contribute to the improvement of my hometown by helping to design cities that are more inclusive, accessible, and environmentally responsible.
I have long admired the UK’s approach to urban planning, particularly its emphasis on sustainability and quality of life. This admiration led me to pursue the MSc Urban Planning course at UWE Bristol, whose focus on design quality and implementation strongly appeals to me. I want to learn how cities can be planned effectively so that, one day, I can return to Tangerang and contribute meaningfully to its development. As an architect, future urban planner, and member of my community, I feel a responsibility to help improve the lives of others.
My connection with the UK began in 2013, when I attended a summer school programme at Stafford House to study advanced English. During that time, I visited cities such as Cambridge and Oxford, and quickly developed a deep appreciation for England, not only because of its architecture and culture, but also because of the kindness of its people. I experienced this kindness personally when I became ill with influenza and later injured myself in a fall. In both situations, the care and compassion I received from complete strangers left a lasting impression on me.
After completing my bachelor’s degree in Indonesia and beginning my career as an architect, I became increasingly aware of the urban issues facing Tangerang, including poor accessibility, limited green spaces, and severe traffic congestion. These challenges strengthened my desire to study urban planning in the UK, where I had previously admired the planning and organisation of cities such as London.
Preparing for this move while working full-time as an architect during the Covid-19 pandemic was both demanding and rewarding. Balancing work, applications, and travel preparations taught me valuable lessons in discipline, organisation, and time management. It also reinforced the importance of resilience and maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing during difficult times.
I am excited to begin my studies at UWE Bristol and to explore the city and wider UK. Beyond academics, I look forward to joining the university cycling club and travelling throughout the country. In the future, I hope to gain professional experience in cities such as London or Manchester before eventually returning to Indonesia. My long-term goal remains clear: to use the knowledge and experience I gain in the UK to improve urban life in Tangerang through thoughtful and sustainable planning.
