My dream to pursue photography, marking a major shift in my life direction, was taking me to live in Bristol. ”
Growing up in Hong Kong, I often photographed natural landscapes and urban scenes, but over time I found this limiting and repetitive. I had never explored photographing people, and I wanted to push myself creatively by learning how to express emotions and perspectives through portrait photography. While researching universities, my uncle recommended UWE Bristol after hearing from a British Council representative in Hong Kong that it was an excellent choice for arts programmes. After researching the university and its highly ranked photography course, I became convinced it was the right place for me.
Before moving to England, my international experience had mainly come through travel and business trips during my ten-year engineering career, including visits to Germany. Choosing to leave engineering behind and pursue photography in Bristol marked a major turning point in my life. At the same time, changing political circumstances in Hong Kong and my desire for a new environmentstrengthened my motivation to relocate.
Although I did not feel nervous before arriving in England, I quickly encountered unexpected challenges. On my first night in Bristol, I had no electricity in my room because I had not been shown how to activate the pay-as-you-go meter. Since it was late at night, my landlord was unavailable, so I experimented with the meter myself until I solved the problem. It was a small challenge, but it gave me confidence in my ability to adapt independently.
Since arriving, I have found Bristol to be welcoming and comfortable. The people are friendly and, despite England’s reputation for bad weather, the summer heat can sometimes feel even warmer than in Hong Kong. I enjoy exploring the city, especially places such as Clifton Suspension Bridge and the nearby observatory. I also feel very safe here, even when returning home late at night. My classes take place at the City Campus at Arnolfini, which is conveniently close to where I live.
My studies have greatly expanded my creative interests. The tutors encourage experimentation and have introduced me to areas of photography I had never attempted before, particularly portraiture. Whereas I once focused mainly on landscapes and city scenes, my work now centres on people. I have also learned new technical skills, such as using artificial lighting effectively and simplifying the composition of photographs by reducing unnecessary information or elements. I especially value the university’s photography facilities, including the darkroom, and hope to begin working with film cameras in addition to digital photography.
Outside class, I have built a strong social life through both my course and the Bristol Volleyball Club. Volleyball has helped me connect with local and international friends, creating a diverse and supportive community. Looking ahead, I remain open-minded about my future. While I have not yet decided on a specific career path, I hope photography will remain an important part of my life, and I intend to continue building my future in the UK.
